Magic Man

Magic Man

Andre “Magic Man” Phipps
Born in the beautiful island of St. Vincent and  imigrated to Canada when I was just 7 years old. I got into music at an early age of 14. I started off playing music at home entertaining my Parents friends when they would come by the family house. When I was 17 years old  I decided that being a Disc Jockey is what I wanted to become.  I would go to work  in the day at Estee Lauder Cosmetics, and at nights I found myself playing at a Night Club Call These Eyes until 6am Thursdays to Sundays. I did that for 10 years. Working at Estee Lauder is not what I wanted,  so I left the Company and decided that I wanted to study Radio Broadcasting which I did at National Institute of Broadcasting (N I B) where I studied Radio and Television,  plus Journalism. I went to work shortly after that at a local College Radio station. If that wasn’t enough I then decided that I wanted to get into Television and the Movie Industry. My first job in the Movie Industry was an Extra in a Phillip Marloe  movie where I played a gangster hustling on the streets. I then did a Television Show called Mariah State where I played a Prison Guard. As they do in this Business I’ve been type cast, to play either a Police officer or a Prison officer in more films that I worked on. Toronto became Hollywood North and I started getting involved in behind the scene work where I became an assistant Casting agent to Scott Mansfield. Since becoming an Agent I’ve worked on numerous movies such as 3 Men and a Baby with Tom Selleck, Cocktails with Tom Cruise. I also worked with Actors such as Redd Foxx, John Travolta, Christopher Reeve, Billie D Williams and many more Actors. After 7 years of being a Casting Agent I Had enough and decided that  Being in Radio is what I wanted to do, so I went back into College Radio. Love Songs was always my Passion followed by R&B and then Reggae Music. I have gained the name Magic when I was at the Club These Eyes which they later changed to These Eyes Love Nest  because I introduced them to playing love Songs for the last 2 hours of each night just  before the club closes at 6am. Most Men would Dance the last 2 hours with either a woman that they met at the club, or their girlfriends that came with them. Most of the times these women would get into a relationship, have kids and then get married. But somehow I was responsible for a lot of babies being born so they would say I have the Magic Touch. Listening to late night shows across North America  call The Quiet Storm which was introduced by Smokey Robinson, with the host being a Female or a Male. But one thing is for sure that the host has to have a Seductive Voice. I came to St. Kitts in December 2005 after my father was murdered to operate his store “Trade Link”, I then decided that’s not what I wanted. After listening to the Radio Stations in St. Kitts I realize that no one plays soft music late at nights so I decided that if I’m going to stay here in the Federation may be I can start my own “Quiet Storm” here. The break came for me when I met then Country Manager for Cable & Wireless Miss Patricia Walters who gave me that boost to go ahead. I got my Start at Sugar City Roc from Mr. Val Thomas, moved to Kyss Fm, for 15 months, and decided that I needed more listenership for my show that’s when Winn Fm accepted my proposal stayed there for 18 months and decided to come back to where I actually started “SUGAR CITY ROC”.
